Our Baby Chiropractor Melbourne recommend that babies should be checked as soon as possible after birth to help alleviate spinal problems and nerve distress arising from constraint or abnormal positioning in the uterus, from the journey through the birth canal, or during the delivery process itself.
Chiropractic adjustments for infants and children differ significantly from those performed on adults. Infant adjustments are very gentle.
An incredible 65% of neurological development (development of the brain and nervous system) occurs in a child's first year of life. It is therefore imperative to ensure that infants have every opportunity to maximise their nerve function during this critical period.

Healthier Infants & Babies as explained by Baby Chiropractor Melbourne
You do everything to ensure your baby's health: during pregnancy you eat right; you avoid drugs, cigarettes and alcohol (even aspirin has been shown to cause problems in pregnancy); and you take childbirth classes, so you may have a natural, drug-free birth. After the baby arrives, you breastfeed knowing that is the superior form of nutrition; you do everything you can to make sure your baby is healthy-but have you had their spine checked? A chiropractic spinal check-up can ensure a healthier baby, one with higher resistance to disease and a healthier nervous system.
Birth Trauma - The First Subluxation as explained by Baby Chiropractor Melbourne
The birth process... is potentially a traumatic event... mechanical stress imposed by obstetrical manipulation-even the application of standard orthodox procedures may prove intolerable to the foetus. The view has bean expressed clinically that most signs of neonatal injury observed in the delivery room are neurological... Towbin A., Latent spinal cord and brain stem injury in newborn infants. Develop. Med. Child Neurol., 1969.
"With the birth process becoming more and more an intervening procedure ... the chiropractic adjustment becomes even more important to the child's future," late Larry Webster, D.C., of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association
The Spine & Infant Health as explained by Baby Chiropractor Melbourne
Guttmann’s Medical research showed a random group of 1,250 babies examined 5 days after birth, 211 suffered from vomiting, hyperactivity and sleeplessness spinal abnormalities were found in 95% of this group. Spinal adjustment "frequently resulted in immediate quieting, cessation of crying, muscular relaxation and sleepiness." The authors noted that an unhealthy spine causes "many clinical features from central motor impairment to lower resistance to infections-especially ear, nose and throat infections."
Recent research (May 09) reporting on infants with colic and acid reflux reveals that chiropractic may play an important role in helping resolve these conditions. "Research is revealing that injuries to the upper part of the neck may be a factor in a number of disorders. These injuries lead to misalignments in the neck that may compress the spinal cord and other nerve structures in the neck. This compression leads to nerve interference and can result in a host of disorders such as colic and acid reflux" stated Dr. Erin Elster the author of the study.
"It makes a lot of sense when you think about it" stated Dr. Matthew McCoy a chiropractor, public health researcher and editor of the journal that published the study, "If you damage or compress the neurological structures in the neck this can have far reaching implications on the functioning of the body. Through research like Dr. Elster's we are finding that correcting the misalignments associated with these injuries reduces the nerve compression and people improve. In this study it was infants suffering from colic and acid reflux."
In the study, sixteen infants with colic or acid reflux were evaluated and cared for using protocols developed to correct upper neck subluxations. Histories of birth trauma were reported in 10 cases; upper cervical subluxations were found in all 16 cases; and 100% of the cases responded to chiropractic care with symptoms completely resolved. According to Dr. Elster, these results suggest a link between birth trauma, upper cervical injury, and the onset of colic and acid reflux. Correcting the injury to the upper cervical spine through the use of specific chiropractic adjustments appears to eliminate colic and acid reflux. The author calls for further study in a controlled environment with larger sample sizes.
Published in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health May 9, 2009 Author Erin Elster DC
In another study, of 1093 newborns checked, 298 had upper neck stress and early signs of scoliosis.
When Does A Baby Need a Spinal Checkup? According to chiropractic pediatric specialist, Larry Webster, D.C., there are six times in a baby's first year of life when spinal examinations are especially important:
1. After the birth process
2. When the baby starts to hold his/her head up
3. When the baby sits up
4. When the baby starts to crawl
5. When the baby starts to stand
6. When the baby starts to walk
A healthier spine can improve your life.
